Leading Through Uncertainty: Staying Grounded When the Path Isn’t Clear

Uncertainty is a necessary part of leadership, especially considering the ever-changing nature of our world today. Yet, leaders continue to experience pressure to have all the answers and present a flawless decision-making resume. But the truth is that real leadership isn't about knowing everything; it’s about showing up authentically and navigating the unknown with curious confidence and grounded composure.

In this post, we’ll explore how to stay curious, confident, and grounded in the midst of uncertainty so you can lead even when you are still finding the way forward.

Cultivate Calm

Your presence will set the tone for your team. When you’re grounded, calm and present, your team can sense it and they will follow suit. Prioritize small practices that help you reset and manage stress before engaging with your team.

Try the following grounding exercise to regulate your nervous system before entering into a meeting or important conversation:

  • Sit or stand with both feet flat on the ground

  • Take a deep breath and consciously feel the ground beneath you

  • Let your shoulders drop and exhale slowly

You can repeat this as needed until you feel your physical body relax. Physically grounding your body reinforces a sense of stability and calm. It’s subtle and especially useful when you need to reset in real time.

Lean In with Curiosity

Eliminating uncertainty is a fool’s errand and will only add additional pressure that leads to rash decisions. Instead of looking for certainty, try approaching uncertainty with curiosity versus judgement. Curiosity promotes openness, creativity and collaboration. Judgement instead promotes negative energy and closes us off to new ideas or possibilities.

Try asking yourself and your team some of the following questions:

  • What do we know?

  • What is the most pressing thing that we need to know right now?

  • If we did have an answer, what first step might we take?

Be Transparent and Connected

Transparency is a powerful tool when paired with intentional connection. As a leader, you don’t need to have all the answers and you don’t have to disclose every detail, but you do need to bring members of your team into the situation with honesty and intentionality. Offer your team honest insights that keep them informed and connected without creating unnecessary anxiety.

Think of your team as a resource and ask yourself some of the following questions:

  • Who on my team might have experience with a problem like this?

  • What information is important to communicate?

  • Which team members naturally carry what we might need right now (think encouragement, vision, resolve, etc.)?

Uncertainty will always be part of leadership, but how you show up in the uncertainty makes all the difference. When you lead with curious confidence, grounded composure, and authentic presence, you make it easy for your team to follow your example and embrace the unknown with the same resilience and openness
